CARRIE LEE MCCLELLAND
painter.photographer.art historian
The captivation of visual expression through painting… Photography… Sculpture… Mixed media… Interactives… As well as dance… Musical performance… Sound… Vibration… Have been an extensive defining factor of my entire life. One cannot simply tell the story of experience without also being engaged and formed by everything influencing one’s natural world.
My focus has always been founded in traditional art through painting and drawing as well as photography. This started at an extremely young age where I was given Art lessons and an old brownie camera was placed into my hands. The process over time, has been an evolution through many decades, supported by an absolute consuming focus of all forms of artistic history. Without a doubt this is my great love.
My art education officially began at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, in the early 1980s, studying with the esteemed portait artist, Henry Koerner and Environmental artist, Angelo Ciotti. In these powerful teachings, I was exposed to expansive ways of thinking and approaching art. The deep influence of Jungian psychology, symbolism, study of the esoteric spiritual sciences, and alchemy pulled me toward diving deeper and deeper into the multitude of human expressions. In recent years, I have shown artwork in juried shows at Centenary University as well as online juried exhibits throughout Europe.
The process is ongoing, and the current focus is returning back to shapes and form with light in both photography and in painting. Submersion into Art is on a regular committed basis, allowing me to see the best capacities of self expression of the many who share with the world, as a spiritual as well as personal act. Current photography study has been with the guidance of the Princeton Photo Workshop, supporting the fine tuning of accurate use of modern technology. The days of the brownie camera are long past.
Ultimately, life is about consciously creating joy and cultivating full self expression. The intention is to stay with this practice to my last breath. I’m glad to support those who want to dip the toe into the sea of creativity as well as those who desire to take the high dive.
I have found that humans want to make art because inside all of us we truly are just storytellers… And there is something deep within that seeks that expression.
